Improving social function with real-world social-cognitive remediation in schizophrenia: Results from the RemedRugby quasi-experimental trial

Background.
Functional capacity (FC) has been identified as a key outcome to improve real-world functioning in schizophrenia. FC is influenced by cognitive impairments, negative symptoms, self-stigma and reduced physical activity (PA). Psychosocial interventions targeting FC are still under-developed.
Methods.we conducted a quasi-experimental study evaluating the effects of an exercise-enriched integrated social cognitive remediation (SCR) intervention (RemedRugby [RR]) compared with an active control group practicing Touch Rugby (TR). To our knowledge, this is the first trial to date evaluating the effectiveness of such a program provided in a real-life environment.
Results.Eighty-seven people with schizophrenia were included and allocated to either the RR group (n = 57) or the TR group (n = 30) according to the routine clinical practice of the recruiting center. Outcomes were evaluated at baseline and post-treatment in both groups and after 6 months of follow-up in the RR group using standardized scales for symptom severity, social functioning, self-stigma, and a large cognitive battery. After treatment we observed moderate to large improvements in social function (Personal and Social Performance Scale [PSP], p < 0.001, d = 1.255), symptom severity (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale [PANSS] negative, p < 0.001, d = 0.827; PANSS GP, p < 0.001, d = 0.991; PANSS positive, p = 0.009, d = 0.594), verbal abstraction (p = 0.008, d = 0.554), aggression bias (p = 0.008, d = 0.627), and self-stigma (stereotype endorsement, p = 0.019, d = 0.495; discrimination experiences, p = 0.047; d = 0.389) that were specific to the RR group and were not observed in participants playing only TR. Effects were persistent over time and even larger between post-treatment and follow-up.
Conclusions.Exercise-enriched integrated SCR appears promising to improve real-life functioning in schizophrenia. Future research should investigate the potential effects of this intervention on neuroplasticity and physical fitness.
A New Sample Preparation System for Micro-14C Dating of Glacier Ice with a First Application to a High Alpine Ice Core from Colle Gnifetti (Switzerland)

Radiometric dating of glacier ice is an essential tool where stratigraphic dating methods cannot be applied. This study focuses on Alpine glacier ice and presents a new sample preparation system for dating of glacier ice samples via radiocarbon (14C) dating of the microscopic particulate organic carbon (POC) fraction incorporated in the ice matrix. An adaptable, low-cost inline filtration-oxidation-unit (REFILOX) has been developed, which for the first time unifies all sample preparation steps from ice filtration to CO2 quantification in one closed setup. A systematic 14C investigation of modern European aerosol samples revealed that a POC combustion temperature of 340°C provides the best representation of the real sample age. A very low process blank of maximally 0.3±0.1 µgC now enables 14C dating of high Alpine ice samples, where POC concentrations are generally low (typically 10–50 µgC/kg), in an ice sample mass range of 300–500 g. In a first successful application, the method was used to obtain age constraints for an ice core from the cold, high Alpine firn saddle Colle Gnifetti (Switzerland). Analysis of the bottom ice core sections revealed a basal age of 4171–3923 cal yr BP but also a so far enigmatic discontinuity in the age-depth relationship.

In this paper we first summarise major findings of recent atmospheric studies of nitrogen and sulphur species present in the boundary layer of coastal Antarctic regions. We then discuss the implications of such atmospheric data for the interpretation of nitrate, ammonium, methanesulphonate and sulphate records in deep ice cores extracted from central Antarctica in terms of past atmospheric chemistry changes.

The chemical composition of soluble impurities along the Dome C ice core covering approximately the last 30 000 years is reported and interpreted in terms of atmospheric contributions. Terrestrial and sea-salt inputs are known to have been much higher during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) than during the Holocene period. For this reason, the gas-derived compounds (mainly H2SO4 and HNO3) which dominate the chemistry of present-day snow are minor components in LGM snow. The exact calculation of each of the various contributions has been made possible by the determination of all major ions (H+, Na+, K+, NH4+, Mg2+, Ca2+, NO3−, SO42− and Cl−) in the samples. Three additional deep ice cores from other Antarctic areas have also been analyzed, but in a less comprehensive manner than the Dome C core. The differences observed at the four study sites increase the general understanding of the past atmospheric chemistry of the Southern Hemisphere.

D 57 station in Terre Adélie lies between the coast and the central Antarctic plateau. A 200 m ice core was recovered in summer 1980–81 at this location and analyzed by an electroconductometric method to detect exceptional acid levels linked to fallout from major volcanic eruptions. Several signals were indeed found. The corresponding ice-core sections were then analyzed for mineral acids (H2SO4 and HNO3). We detected several large volcanic events, in particular two eruptions identified as Tarabora (1815) and Galunggung (1822). The background concentration of sulphate was found to be relatively low (about 0.5 μeq 1−1). On the other hand nitrate values were higher than at coastal or central Antarctic locations (except for the Sauth Pole). Two spikes were found in the nitrate profile at depths of 140 and 148 m. It is thought that they could be either linked to the 1604 and 1572 supernovae Kepler and Tycho or correspond to epochs of particularly high solar activities. With the aid of these sulphate and nitrate exceptional events, a dating of the D 57 ice core can now be proposed which corresponds to a mean snow accumulation rate of 22 cm of ice equivalent per year over the last four centuries.

New results concerning the concentration of sulphate (SO4) and nitrate (NO3) in Antarctic snow and ice are presented. At Dome C, 10-year mean values and detailed studies (more than one sample a−1) were done at different depths corresponding to ages from 0 to 23 ka BP. Global volcanic activity strongly disturbs profiles of sulphate concentration for periods of a few years. Long-term fluctuations are found to be weak for both anions. The mean values obtained for acidity agree satisfactorily with the values for sulphate and nitrate. Finally, we examine the probable origin of these gas-derived aerosols in Antarctica.

The chemistry of recently deposited snow sampled in 1982–83 along a 430 km coast-interior traverse in Terre Adelie, East Antarctica, is reported. In addition, three firn samples, covering the same time period (1959 to 1969) and collected on the traverse at D 55, D 80 and Dome C stations, respectively at 200, 430 and 1070 km from the sea, are also studied. Concentrations of major soluble impurities (H+, , Na+, K+, Cl−, and ) were determined by ion chromatography (except H+ which was titrated) on more than 200 samples. Conditions of sampling and analysis were carefully controlled in order to avoid contamination problems. A balanced ionic budget was generally obtained for each of the samples. For stations occupying an intermediary position between the coastal areas and the central Antarctic plateau, our results demonstrate that the two major impurities are H2SO4 and HNO3. HCl is also present, but at a lower level of concentration; the sea-salt contribution is dominant only at the most coastal sites (within 40 km) of the sea. The degree of neutralization of the snow acidity by NH3 is always very low as indicated by the values of content. The mean concentrations of H2SO4 along the traverse are relatively constant whereas an increase of the HNO3 concentrations is observed when going inland. It decreases, however, in most central areas. These results are discussed in relation to the glaciochemical data published for other locations on the Antarctic plateau, in particular the sulphate concentrations which depend strongly on explosive volcanic activity.
Urinary citrulline in very low birth weight preterm infants receiving intravenous nutrition

As gut immaturity precludes full enteral feeding, very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants receive parenteral nutrition (PN) during the first few weeks of life. Weaning VLBW infants off PN, however, is a top priority since PN is associated with a high risk of complications. The decision making is purely empirical, as there is currently no suitable index of gastrointestinal (GI) maturity. Plasma citrulline concentration is considered an index of GI function in conditions such as short-bowel syndrome and coeliac disease in adults. To identify the factors determining urinary citrulline excretion, and determine whether urinary citrulline excretion could be used as a non-invasive index of GI tolerance to enteral feeding, nutritional intake and urinary citrulline were monitored bi-weekly in forty-seven preterm infants < 1500 g (interquartiles 880–1320 g), during their stay in the Neonatology unit. Median urinary citrulline was 24·7 μmol/mmol creatinine (14·5–38·6 μmol/mmol creatinine). No relationship was observed with the percentage of energy tolerated enterally. In multivariate regression analysis, weak correlations were found with post-conceptional age (P = 0·001), parenteral amino acid supply (P = 0·001) and the daily volume of enteral mixture administered (P = 0·043). A significant correlation was found with urinary nitrite+nitrate excretion (r 0·47; P < 0·001). We conclude that in preterm infants: (1) one of the major determinants of urinary citrulline may be the biosynthesis of citrulline from arginine by NO-synthase; (2) urinary citrulline cannot be used to predict GI tolerance. This is consistent with the observations that, in neonatal gut, citrulline is converted to arginine in situ rather than exported towards the kidneys as observed in adults.
Growth and reproduction of the common whelk Buccinum undatum in west Cotentin (Channel), France

The common whelk Buccinum undatum (Neogastropoda, Buccinidae) is widespread along the north Atlantic coasts of France. In west Cotentin (Normandy), an important local fishery exists that depends exclusively on this marine resource and represents about 90% of French whelk production. Despite successive restrictive measures, fishing yields have decreased since 2000. Shell length frequency distributions of Buccinum undatum caught in west Cotentin were studied in 2005 (N = 2910), in 2007 (N = 2032) and in 2009 (N = 4145) ranging from 7 to 85 mm. In order to preserve this fishery and to characterise the whelk stock at this site, the reproductive biology of this species was studied in relation to age, sex and size, for whelks of commercial size (45 to 61 mm) over the complete annual cycle in 2008. Age was determined by reading the number of operculum striae: animals between 45 and 59 mm had 2 to 4 striae. Four reproductive stages were defined for males and females on the basis of histological analysis. The time course of reproductive events was described according to size and sex: the highest percentages of ripe stages were found in October for both sexes. Spawning events occurred between October and December. The shell length that corresponded to 50% of animals having mature gonads (49 mm and 52 mm for males and females, respectively, corresponding to 3 and 4 years old animals) exceeded the minimal landing size (45 mm). Fifty percent maturity was reached for males in their third year and for females in their fourth year. Reproductive investment was evaluated by quantitative analysis of the gonadal thickness or surface and was found to be proportional to shell size. We found that less than 20% of females under 49 mm in length were sexually mature and that these produced only a few eggs. This information, collected in a major fishing area, should assist fishery management decisions.

Dans certains procédés de mise en forme, tel que le laminage, l'apparition des contraintes résiduelles est inévitable et peut engendrer le flambage qui se traduit en défauts géométriques. Ceci exige la modélisation de ce phénomène d'instabilité mécanique afin de bien définir la forme et l'amplitude de ces défauts. Cela nécessite un modèle complet ayant des capacités pour le calcul du post-flambage. Dans le présent article, on présente un modèle de flambage possédant la faculté de détecter la charge critique de flambage et la forme post-flambée d'une plaque sous contraintes résiduelles. Des applications à des cas académiques et un cas de laminage seront aussi traités.
Humoral defence improvement and haematopoiesis stimulation in sows and offspring by oral supply of shark-liver oil to mothers during gestation and lactation

Shark-liver oil (SLO) contains two bioactive lipids: alkylglycerols and n-3 PUFA. Alkylglycerols have immunostimulating and haematopoietic properties, while n-3 PUFA are essential for optimal neonatal development. We investigated the beneficial effects of dietary supplementation with 32g SLO/d to twelve pregnant and then lactating sows (from day 80 of pregnancy to weaning) on the growth and immune status of their offspring, compared with a control group. Sows were vaccinated against Aujeszky's disease 21d before term. Blood samples were collected from sows before treatment, on delivery and 14d later, and from five piglets per litter on days 2, 21 and 36 after birth; colostrum and milk samples were collected 12h, 14 and 28d postpartum. Compared with controls, supplemented sows had higher levels of both erythrocytes and Hb in their blood, and higher concentrations of IgG, alkylglycerols and n-3 PUFA in their mammary secretions. In piglets from supplemented sows, leucocytes and IgG were higher. Supplementation with SLO resulted in an increase in Aujeszky antibodies in both blood and colostrum of sows after vaccination, together with an increase in Aujeszky antibodies in piglet blood. Our findings demonstrate that improvement of both passive and active immune status in piglets is related to the consumption of alkylglycerols associated with n-3 PUFA in the sow diet. The overall improvement in offspring health status by SLO supplementation to the mother could be of interest for optimisation of the lipid diet during and after pregnancy.

A region of approximately 270 000 km2 near the south pole of the Moon has not been mapped by spacecraft and Dr John Westfall of ALPO proposed the “Luna Incognita” programme in 1972 to try to cover this area. A brief summary of the problems of observing this limb region was given, together with the author’s experience using the T60 and 1-m telescopes at Pic du Midi.
